Alternative vehicle propulsion systems

Low-emission vehicles have now been making inroads into the mobile machinery and commercial vehicle sectors for several years. To achieve cleaner and more efficient use of primary energy, there is growing interest in new vehicle concepts, such as electric, hybrid, or fuel cell powertrains. In the passenger car sector, electric drives have become virtually indispensable. Although it is now common practice to eliminate or downsize internal combustion engines through electrification, it remains to be seen which drive technology will be best suited in the long term—in terms of cost and energy efficiency—for the various types of construction and agricultural machinery or commercial vehicles.
